Luminous design from the backyard in Palma's old town
A romantic backyard in Carrer Sant Feliu is one of the top addresses for modern lamp design in Mallorca.
Here, in the heart of Palma's old town, Mauricio Obarrio and Juan Peralta live and work. In their studio apartment, the two young Argentineans design glass, brass and chrome luminaires - numbered one-off pieces, which they make with the Mallorcan glass manufacturers Gordiola and Menestralia.
From Buenos Aires to Mallorca
In 2016, when the couple moved from Buenos Aires to Majorca, they built their brand Contain. The name expresses what they feel about Mallorca: "A place that carries us and where we feel safe," explains Mauricio Obarrio, who studied industrial design with a focus on lighting in Buenos Aires. His career started during his studies: he designed the lighting for the famous Isabel Bar in Buenos Aires and received a design prize for it. This was followed by orders for the Veuve Clicquot Lounge at the Algodón Mansion Hotel as well as for the Art Deco Hotel Miami.
Noble lights made of local materials
"A typical Contain lamp is recognizable by its purist form with Art Deco influences," explains Juan Peralta, responsible for Contain's creative advertising. For his collections, the couple experiment with local materials, which are refined by design and technology. In addition to glass, brass, nickel and chrome are also used for the lights. They fabricate the housing for the electromechanical internal parts from a thermoplastic bioplastic made of sugar cane on 3-D printers. The elegant Contain lamps already light up in some of the island's properties, they fit in old mansions as well as in the modern villa. On request, a switch board made of brass is made for each wall and ceiling lamp suitable for the environment.
Tables and shelves with terrazzo stone slabs
The idea to design tables and shelves is still relatively new. To date, the furniture collection Connector includes tables and shelves in various sizes with a construction of iron, polished brass and terrazzo surfaces. The flagstones are made by the Mallorcan tile manufacturer Huguet in Campos, they are available in different colours and designs and custom made according to the needs of the customer as well as the Containers.
