Visiting Mallorca's private estates

Visiting Mallorca's private estates

Magnificent, sophisticated and no longer replicable due to building regulations: Mallorca's original historic country houses are among the most valuable and original properties Mallorca has to offer. A few of them are for sale, whilst others have been converted into beautiful hotels. If you would like to experience the special atmosphere of these traditional estates, you should spend a night in a Mallorcan possessió.

Long history, great tradition

Mallorca's largest and oldest estates have their origins in the 13th century when King Jaime I conquered Mallorca. These rural fincas included a noble manor house with stables, wine cellar, mill and a chapel in addition to further houses for the workers who took care of the livestock and the land. Mallorca has over 1,250 so-called ´posesiones´ (Mallorcan possessió). Around 300 of the noble estates are used today for agriculture, events, hotels and wineries. Others have not been farmed upon for years or are about to fall down.

Valuable investment in something unique

´Posesiones´ can be found all over the island, many of them are located close to the Sierra de Tramuntana because there is enough water there to support agriculture. However, also in the southeast of the island near the dream beach Es Trenc, there are still a few historic fincas with orchards, olive oil production and horse stables. The ´Posesiones´ that are for sale today no longer have their original size as they have been split up over the centuries. They are still large for today's conditions though, with hundreds of square meters of land, forests and extensive terraces with thousands of olive trees.

Sustainable rural tourism

18 stately estates have been transformed into beautiful hotels in the past few years, perfect for anyone who wants to get to know Mallorca's cuisine, history and traditions. These grand country hotels can be booked through the Itinerem website. In addition, four private estates have opened their doors for visitors, a Mallorcan historian accompanies the multilingual tours through the ´Posesiones´. The around two and a half hour tours end with a rustic snack of olives, oil, bread, cheese and wine served between the magnificent, centuries-old walls.
