Meeting point for furniture art in Palma
La Pecera means fish glass and anyone who looks into the glass through the painted fishing net on the shop window will discover braided chairs and furniture in mid-century style, leather and bast accessories, Syrian kilim carpets, along with pillows, towels and lights from all over the world.
Designer Marlén Albaladejo fishes in many waters for her design shop La Pecera in Palma. The Mallorcan also designs contemporary furniture, lamps, hats and shoes inspired by the traditional craftsmanship of Mallorca. All objects are made by Mallorcan craftsmen in a sustainable way and using local materials.
Design chairs with Palmito-meshwork
Several craftsmen usually work on the furniture. Take, for example, a stool with a cover made of Palmito. A carpenter, turner, upholsterer and braider for the palm leaves are needed. In Mallorca, palmito is the hand-made cord made from the leaves of the dwarf palm tree that grows in Pollensa, Artà and Capdepera. Every piece of furniture is excellently made - Marlén Albaladejo knows every craftsman personally! The beach loungers are also custom-made and the material for the cover was developed with the Mallorcan fabric manufacturer Bujosa in Santa Maria del Camí. The designer found inspiration for her wall lamp Philodendron in typical Mallorcan patios where the green plant of the same name grows with its decorative leaves.
Straw hats and Espadrilles from Mallorca
Her favourite pieces also include handmade straw hats from Palmito which have a characteristic round cup and wide wings. The hats are similar to those still worn by Mallorcan farmers in the fields today. Her self-designed espadrilles also have a long tradition in Mallorca. Marlén Albaladejo has the typical alpargatas, called espardenyes in Catalan, made of double-layered tongue fabrics and provides them with a robust rubber sole. Her soft spot for shoe design lies in the family; her great-grandfather founded the shoe company Carmina Shoemaker, for whose creative department Marlén Albaladejo was responsible for many years.
