Two years ago, Carlos Marqués constructed a villa on a hillside plot in this, Palma’s upmarket suburb. The upper part of the plot was not suitable for a garden, due to its many pine trees and rocks, therefore the architect decided to build a one-room cube with a terrace instead – from where one can enjoy the magnificent views of the Bay of Palma.
That project called “Kubbs”, is art and architecture alike: The red cuboid seems to hover above the slope, but in fact it is standing on a cement base, which is not visible to the eye of the observer.
Minimalism is nothing new in architecture, its roots tracing back to the Modernism movement of the 1920s. The structures of the buildings of those days were reduced massively and often had cubic shapes. Architects like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe or Luis Barragán created clean lines, geometrical buildings made of glass, concrete, steel and natural stone.
Carlos Marqués is convinced that his micro architecture has great potential in Mallorca. In Son Vida as well as all around Port d’Andratx and Bendinat there are many hill side plots with surfaces that are hard to use architecturally.
Requirement for a building permit is, that the parcel be an urban plot, explains the architect. His architectural office covers everything from design to building permits and execution of construction work up to the handing over of the keys.
If you want to build a copy of the red prototype, you’ll need to be open to design variations - Carlos Marqués never repeats a design.
