Santa Maria has long been popular for those wanting a special house or Finca with privacy, land and perhaps an area for orange or lemon trees. As space is more plentiful here than on the coast, it is also possible to own a property with riding facilities and many hectares of land. The wines of Macia Batle are made here and the town offers one of the best markets on the island. The nearby towns of Alaro, Binissalem and Bunyola are all special in their own way and in the rural areas between them, some of the most magical countryside of the whole island is found. As you head further east to Esporles, the rugged mountains of the Tramontana begin to dominate the area, and many appreciate the views and special atmosphere that you find in this village, as well as Orient and Puigpunyent, loved by walkers, hikers and cyclists.
Those who live in the centre of the island know that they are only a short journey from the coast, Palma and indeed most parts of the island as road connections are good and never crowded.
