The wild night of Sant Joan (23 - 24 June)

It’s time for the Night of Sant Joan - else known as “Nit de Foc” (= Night of the fire) - again and we’ll be celebrating the longest day of the year and the beginning of the summer, but for some it’s to celebrate the name-giver, Sant Joan, alias John Baptist. However, for most of the people the religious aspect has become less important during the course of the years.

The beaches of Mallorca will be lit up by candles while thousands of people are gathering there with their family and friends to have a great party. Depending on where the people on the beach towels around you are from, you might get to hear Salsa-rhythms, Bachata-sounds, Hip Hop or Rock music, or all of it together mixed with joyful laughter. Everyone brings some food and drink to share and lots of people even set up a little grill to have a BBQ and there’ll be one or the other bonfire too.

It is tradition to come dressed in white or to jump over the bonfires and to take a midnight bath in the sea (walking into the waves backwards at that!). Others throw 3 coins into the sea over their shoulder, each coin representing a wish. All of which being rituals, which are said to bring luck. Some even write their personal worries down on a piece of paper and then burn the note symbolically in the bonfire for the worries to hopefully go up in smoke the same way.

For those, who like it a little louder and wilder, there will be a major party taking place in Parc de la Mar, just below the Cathedral of Palma, starting as of 11 pm with the “Correfoc” with demons and devils running around spreading fire and smoke to expel evil spirits and demons.

The whole island is celebrating this unforgettably intense event and we highly recommend participating in this yearly tradition.
