Palma City Surroundings
In this area, we include the outskirts of the town of Palma with zones ranging, from west to east: Calanova-Cala Major, Genova, Bonanova-Son Armadams, and Palma-Arenal beach.
Calanova-Cala Major: Cala Major begins just at the end of the promenade of Palma, (the “Paseo Maritimo”), where is the Marivent Palace is located, summer residence of the Spanish Royal Family. The King and Queen of Spain have historically been the best ambassadors for Mallorca, as traditionally, in the month of August, they come and stay at the palace, inviting other royals or important personalities to stay, which always attracts media attention.
Also in Cala Major, is the Calanova sailing school, portcalanova.com/en/ with its very high reputation in dinghy training and famed for training great Spanish sailors. It also has an excellent waterside coffee bar and restaurant, open to the public.
Genova: situated on a small hill, it enjoys panoramic views of the city and the bay of Palma. It is also well known for its restaurants offering Mallorcan cuisine typified by the meat dishes cooked in the traditional charcoal oven of Restaurant Can Pedro, restaurantecanpedro.com. Above Genova is the famous mirador of Na Burguesa, also with a restaurant and offering spectacular views of the bay of Palma.
Bonanova-Son Armadams: Adjacent to Genova, in Bonanova, is the international school of Queens College, www.queenscollege.es. In this quiet residential area is the Bellver Castle, the only castle in Spain built with a circular floor plan and the oldest of its kind in Europe, with its park that has many attractions for children. The exclusive residential area of Son Armadams, former residence of Baron Thyssen, is even nearer to the center of Palma.
Palma Son Vida
Son Vida was inaugurated in 1956 by Juan More who bought the Finca Son Vida to Marques de la Torre as the most exclusive residential area of the city of Palma.
