The boom of hiking in Andratx

The Andratx area has a potential as a holiday destination, which goes far beyond the well-known sun-and-beaches tourism, as it has a fascinating mountainous side to it.

The municipality of Andratx introduced the hiking routes of the area during last year’s tourism fair “Reisen Hamburg 2016”. It is one of the most important tourism fairs in Central Europe, during which about 1,000 exhibitors from more than 80 countries are introducing their countries’ touristic highlights.

The aim was to present the Andratx area’s potential as a holiday destination, which goes far beyond the well-known sun-and-beaches tourism, but focusses more on the mountainous side of the Southwest of the island. After all it is here, where the mountain range, la Serra de Tramuntana, has its beginning, or its end, if you wish.

The Serra de Tramuntana has been declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO under the category of “Cultural Landscapes”. And what landscapes it offers indeed! 90 km of peaks and valleys, of birds and bees, of pines and palm trees and most of all a relaxing peace and quiet! Several of its peaks have an altitude of over 1.000 m, so apart from relaxing, you can also keep fit while going on a hike. And on many of the trails the blue of the sea will be a part of the picturesque scenery.

The choice of routes seems endless. There is a hike from Port Andratx to Sant Elm via which you can also reach the remote Cala d’Egos, then there is the scenic trail from Sant Elm to the former Trappist monastery “La Trapa”, or a shorter one from Sant Elm to an ancient watch tower of the name “d’en Basset”. Or, if you like a bit more of a physical challenge, you can hike up the Mola de S’Esclop, which is just under 1.000 m high. From up here you have breathtaking bird’s eye views of this stunning part of the island. Or you cross over from Sant Elm to the tiny island Sa Dragona and spend a few hours in absolute remoteness hiking to all 3 lighthouses, that there are.

In total there are about 47 hiking trails for you to discover within the region of Andratx and the best time to do so is between October and March or April. The sun is still shining and warms our skins and hearts and some daring souls even go for swims, as in autumn and winter the temperatures often still hit 20°C during the day.
