Portocolom – Colourful traditional fishing boats as far as the eye can see

This venue simply invites to stroll around in its unhurried lanes and hang out in one of the cafés in the harbour to relax mind and soul.

The charming little fishing village Portocolom on Mallorca’s rough Southeast coast boasts the largest natural harbour of the island and used to be the harbour of Felanitx.

There are Majorcans, who insist that voyager and discoverer Cristobal Colón, else known as Christopher Columbus, was born here. Yet again other Majorcans insist, that Majorcan Genova just outside Palma (and not as it is said the Northern Italian sea port) was his place of birth.

Why else would he have corresponded with the Spanish Queen in Catalan (not Italian)? Which according to rumours has been proven ...

Howsoever, after Port de Pollença it is Portocolom, which counts the highest number of traditional fishing boats. In the large, protected bay those original little boats with their bellied hulls, called Llaüts, are lined up along the numerous docks along the harbour esplanade. Many bars and outstanding restaurants can be found in the harbour and invite to linger.

Since there is no beach in the very heart of Portocolom, this cozy fisher village with its picturesque boat garages and the colourful Llaüts, which add to the village’s scenic appearance, managed to preserve its original nature. The dream-like cove Cala Marçal and its large sandy beach (the largest at Portocolom) is not far away.

Our recommendation for bon-vivants is the “Chiringuito S’Arenal”, a quaint beach bar in the bathing bay S’Arenal, in which palates are being spoiled with excellent fish dishes. The feet in the warm sand turn a stay here into an unforgettable experience and enjoying a cocktail at sundown - that’s pure Mallorca-feeling!

And this is our property-recommendation, a lovely and cozy country house in a quiet location in close proximity to the bathing bay S’Arenal and with view to the harbour of Portocolom:
