For them to come to Mallorca, they had to cover a very long distance via the silk road.

In the beginning of the 18th century the fabrics with the tongue design used to be spun from silk and were seen only in wealthy homes in Mallorca, namely as sofa covers, fabric wall covering or blankets and curtains. (Some samples of those can still be seen in the museum La Granja in Esporles.)

Once mechanical weaving looms started to be employed and less expensive material such as linen or cotton were used as thread, other walks of life could finally afford the “tongue fabrics” too.

It takes patience, skills and most of all a lot of experience to weave these fabrics. Values, which in the textile industry of nowadays, have nearly fallen in oblivion.

Teixits Riera, Teixits Vicens and Bujosa e. g. are a some of the few remaining workshops, who continue to produce these special Mediterranean fabrics.
